Abstract: The paper offers a critique of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s conception of non-violence
and attempts to evaluate how the principle of ahimsa endorsed by Gandhi was a misconstrued deviation
from the doctrine of the higher ideal of non-violence and ahimsa advocated in the Bhagavad Gita,
a book that he regarded as his ‘Spiritual Dictionary.’ Also, the paper delves deep into the problem of
violence and war in the Gita and the varying approaches that it applies to resolve the problems. Simultaneously, the paper analyses in detail, ideas and concepts of Swadharma or Class Duty as expounde in the Gita so as to arrive at a precise understanding of the higher teaching of the Gita, on the subject
ahimsa and non-violence, thereby offering a critique of how M.K. Gandhi’s conceptions of the violence
and non-violence sharply deviates from the doctrine of the Gita.
